Kano State Records Over 1000 Gender Based Violence Cases In 2020 – NHRC

He explained that 80 percent of the cases ranged from neglect of parental responsibility, paternity denial and other harmful acts against women.

The Kano State Zonal Office, National Human Rights Commission says it has received over 1000 complains of Gender Based Violence between January to November, 2020.

The Zonal Coordinator of the Commission, Barrister Shehu Abdullahi, disclosed this when the commission paid a courtesy visit to Kano State Chief Judge Justice Nuraddeen Sagir in his office.

Our correspondent reports that the aim of the visit was to seek collaboration of the Chief Judge on the 16 days of Activism embarked on by the commission to end the Gender Based Violence in Kano and Nigeria at large.

Barrister Shehu pointed out that the number of Gender Based Violence Cases in Kano State rose to over 1000 despite lockdown period which restricted public from movement.

He called on the Justice Sector to ensure accelerated trial is adopted in Gender Based Violence cases with the view to curtail the menace.

He also urged Justice Sector to ensure the full implementation of Administration of Criminal Justice Law to succeed in punishing the culprit of Gender Based Violence.

In his response, the chief Judge of Kano State Justice Nuraddeen Sagir said Gender Based Violence has becomes a global pandemic despite daily preaching and awareness by religious leaders and civil society organization.

The Kano State Chief Judge confirmed that Gender Based Violence was on the increase considering the number of cases adjudicating in court.

Consequently, in their separate remarks, Justice Maryam Sabo and Justice Zuwaira Yusuf, stressed the need for relevant stakeholders to put their hands on deck in the view of curtailing the violence.

Justice Maryam who called on the ministry of Justice to avoid delay in the provision of legal advice, stated that legal advice shall be issued within 40 days as provided by Administration of Criminal Justice Act of Kano State.

The 16 days Activism is reserved on every 25 of November to create Awareness and Advocacy through series of activities with the aim of bringing an end to Gender Based Violence.
