It was gathered that the footballer who retired recently from his Greece Football Club, Appollon Smyrnis, paid undisclosed ransom before he was freed at about 10:30pm on Sunday.

A longtime friend of the former footballer, Engr. Big Sam, confirmed the release of Obodo on Monday.

“He has been released. He was released last night. I met him this morning. The town is becoming more unsafe. We are glad that he is back home”, Sam said.

This is the second time Obodo has been kidnapped by gunmen in the state.

The former Udinese midfielder was abducted on June 9, 2012, on his way to church in Warri but was later freed around Isoko area of the state.

Obodo had recently visited former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan to thank him for securing his release when he was kidnapped in 2012.
